Cold sores are the group of blisters on the lip around the mouth. Cold sores are the small blister like lesion which generally appears around the lips on mouth. The skin around the blisters is generally red, swollen and sore. Lesion is unusual tissue found in an organism. The blisters when break leak clear fluid. These blisters usually heal after a many days to two weeks.
The cause of the cold sores is the herpes simplex virus, Herpes simplex virus are of two types :
(i) HSV – 1
(ii) HSV – 2
Both virus types can cause lip and mouth sores. Cold Sores are occasionally confused with canker sores, which occur only in mouth whereas cold sores hardly ever occur in mouth and if they do then roof of the mouth or gums are the sites of their occurrence.
Primary Herpes Simplex Virus refers to the main cause of the known sexually transmitted disease. What we do not know is that herpes can also infect the oral cavity. This virus can also create wounds that can affect the health and compromise the safety of the patient. It starts out as a small mouth sore and eventually spread out into other parts of the mouth. This is why this virus has to be detected early.
Physical appearance
The infection appears much like that of canker sores. A reddish brown wound that usually has bacteria and other foreign elements that can pose a threat to the infected person’s health. Swelling lesions in the lips can also be seen if you have HSV infection.
As mentioned earlier, if the condition gets worse it may spread into other parts of the mouth as well as the throat and lungs.
Who can be infected?
Infants as well as young children at the age of nine can usually be infected. This is because their immune system is still developing and they can be very open to any kind of foreign entities in the environment.
Given this, adults can also be infected by the Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1. This first type of HSV is usually the main cause of oral infections rather than organ infections.
Treatment
Unfortunately, there is no specific recommended treatment for those who are infected. A certain type of drug called Acvclovir or Zovirax can be used to treat patients to with weakened immune systems due to the disease.
